The Procedure

The Gastric Banding procedure is the least traumatic and the only adjustable and reversible obesity surgery available in New Zealand. View Image >>

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. You will be admitted on the day of surgery and generally be required to spend two nights in hospital during recovery.

As there are no large incisions trauma and recovery time is minimised.

Food and drink are not advised on the day of surgery but liquids can be started the next day. Ice chips are permitted. Injections to prevent vein clots will be given and you will be encouraged to get up and walk around, shower and be as active as possible. There might be a tube in your nose to empty the stomach for the first day. Some patients require closer monitoring particularly if there is a history of breathing difficulty (e.g. sleep apnoea) and a period of time in intensive care may be needed. Physiotherapy to help breathing may be needed.
