Pre Surgery_

You will meet the surgeon to discuss the operation and whether this is the correct choice for you. Factors such as your existing weight, past medical and surgical history and attitude towards the operation will all be considered before deciding if laparoscopic banding is the right option. Please mention all illnesses, previous operations and medications. If a decision is made to proceed with surgery, costs and payment methods will be discussed.

Prior to surgery a special diet is begun using a very low calorie liquid (Optifast®) for two weeks and this is continued for four weeks after surgery. This promotes weight loss and makes the surgery safer. Optifast® is designed to totally replace your normal food intake, it contains carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and high quality protein which helps preserve lean body mass (muscle) while you lose your fat stores. It also contains the recommended doses of vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

It is important to take an additional 2 litres of calorie free liquid (preferably water) each day together with 2 cups of green (low starch) vegetables. Optifast® should be avoided by people with juvenile onset diabetes, porphyria or liver disease.

If your weight is over 170 kg then a more prolonged course of weight loss before surgery will be advised. Most patients receiving surgery weigh between 130 to 150 kg. Light, regular exercise is critical to promote weight loss and enhance well being and should be started before surgery. Support groups will be discussed. If there is a history of gastric reflux (heartburn) then a barium meal (X-ray) is often required to determine if a hiatal hernia is present as that needs correction during surgery. Gallstones can also be present is some people and may need removal.

Normally you will be admitted on the day of surgery. The anaesthetist will discuss your health and the anaesthetic you will receive while experienced nurses nurses prepare you for theatre.
